A publication of my latest research article titled "Antibiotic prophylaxis in emergency cholecystectomy for mild to moderate acute cholecystitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials".
-Emergency cholecystectomy is the primary treatment for acute cholecystitis (AC). While perioperative prophylactic antibiotics are commonly used to prevent postoperative infectious complications (PIC), their efficacy is not well-established. Our systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs aimed to evaluate this.
-Our analysis of seven RCTs with 1747 patients showed no significant differences in total PIC, surgical site infections, distant infections, non-infectious complications, mortality, or readmission rates between the antibiotic and placebo groups.
-These findings suggest that the routine use of prophylactic antibiotics in mild to moderate AC may not be necessary.
