I recently completed an incredible end-to-end project at Gravity Books, a fictional company in the publishing industry. In this project, I had the privilege to transform their open-source database from a relational structure into a highly efficient star schema.
As a BI Developer, I was entrusted with this crucial task, and I'm excited to highlight the key aspects of the project.
the project steps :
Understanding Gravity Books' Needs
Designing the Star Schema:
I embarked on designing an efficient star schema. Leveraging my expertise in data modeling, I carefully crafted the structure, ensuring it would align with the business objectives and support the desired analytical capabilities. The star schema design encompassed a central fact table surrounded by dimension tables, enabling fast and comprehensive data analysis.
️ Database Transformation Process:
The transformation process was a meticulous endeavor that required attention to detail and a structured approach. I started by cleaning and preparing the open-source data, ensuring its quality and integrity. Leveraging advanced data cleaning techniques, I addressed inconsistencies, duplicates, and missing values, resulting in a reliable and robust dataset.
Next, I built a data warehouse called "gravity_books_dwh" to serve as a centralized repository for the transformed data. Utilizing the open-source nature of the database, I used Visual Studio SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services) to orchestrate the data integration process, extracting data, transforming, and loading it into the data warehouse.
Empowering Data Analysis:
I leveraged my expertise in SSAS (SQL Server Analysis Services) to create an SSAS cube. The cube provided a multidimensional view of the data, enabling advanced analytics and slicing-and-dicing capabilities.
To visualize the data I developed Power BI measures and a comprehensive dashboard, I created insightful visualizations, interactive reports, and real-time dashboards using Power BI's intuitive interface.
Results and Future Outlook:
The successful transformation of Gravity Books' open-source database into a star schema, along with the development of the data warehouse, SSAS cube, and Power BI dashboard, has revolutionized their data analysis processes.
I am immensely proud of my contributions to this project, as they have significantly impacted Gravity Books' data-driven culture. It was a rewarding experience to collaborate with a talented team and witness the positive outcomes firsthand.
