Bacteriophage :-

•bacteriophage" literally means "bacteria eater," is a type of virus that infects bacteria, consist of composed of a nucleic acid molecule that is surrounded by a protein structure

Types of bacteriophage

1.T-even phages such as T2, T4 and T6 that infect E.coli

2.Temperate phages such as lambda and mu

3.Spherical phages with single stranded DNA such as PhiX174

4.Filamentous phages with single stranded DNA such as M13

5.RNA phages such as Qbeta

Type(s) used as antibacterial agents and an example:-

enzybiotics (cloned host-specific, phage encoded lytic enzymes introduced to combat bacteria without the whole phage) used as prophylaxis and treatment of microbial infections such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumonia and histeria monocytogenes

Advantagesdisadvantages

•potential substitute over conventional approach

•very specific, targeting only one or a few strains of bacteria that reduce the chance of harmful effect on beneficial bacterial strains inside human body

•Effective dose of phase can able to completely eradicate the target organisms or an alternatively phages can be applied or mixed directly onto or into the food productDue to the higher specificity needs to makes different cocktails for the same types of treatment due to bacterial strains or components are differ from region to region

can stimulate immune systems

Antibiotics that lyse bacteria will release bacterial toxins in situ that infects cells and tissues of the body
