Roamia

Tourism Booking Platform for Algeria

Roamia was created with a simple idea in mind: make discovering Algeria as easy and inspiring as booking a trip anywhere else in the world. While many international platforms showcase destinations globally, very few provide a modern digital experience focused on Algerian tourism. The goal of this project was to bridge that gap by designing a platform that encourages both local and international travelers to explore Algeria through beautiful destinations, authentic accommodations, and unique cultural experiences.

Rather than building another hotel listing website, the objective was to create an ecosystem where travelers could search for destinations, compare accommodations, discover local experiences, and organize their entire journey from one place. Every screen was designed to inspire exploration while keeping the booking process fast and intuitive.

The project started by analyzing successful travel platforms such as Airbnb and Booking.com to understand how users search for accommodations, compare options, and complete reservations. Instead of copying existing interfaces, I focused on adapting those proven interaction patterns to fit the Algerian tourism market while giving Roamia its own visual identity. The result is a clean interface centered around immersive photography, generous spacing, and a booking flow that minimizes friction from the first search to the final reservation.

One of the biggest design challenges was organizing different types of travel content within a single experience. The platform needed to present destinations, hotels, apartments, desert camps, guided tours, and local activities without overwhelming users. To solve this, the information architecture was carefully structured into clear categories with consistent layouts, allowing users to switch naturally between destinations, accommodations, and experiences while maintaining context throughout their journey.

Another challenge involved balancing inspiration with functionality. Travel websites must first create an emotional connection before asking users to make booking decisions. For that reason, the homepage opens with a cinematic hero section and destination imagery that encourages exploration, while the booking search remains immediately accessible. This separation between inspiration and planning creates a smoother experience and follows best practices used by leading travel platforms.

A responsive search experience became the center of the entire product. Users can search by destination, travel dates, and number of guests using a simplified interface inspired by familiar booking systems. Popular destinations, featured accommodations, and curated travel experiences are presented through reusable card components, ensuring visual consistency while allowing the platform to scale as more destinations and listings are added.

Visual design played a significant role in communicating trust. A light color palette combined with soft shadows and rounded components creates an approachable experience, while carefully selected photography transforms every destination into a story rather than simply another listing. The warm orange accent color reinforces exploration and hospitality without distracting from the imagery itself.

To maintain consistency throughout the platform, a reusable design system was created in Figma. Shared components, typography, spacing rules, color tokens, and interactive states allowed every page to feel connected while significantly reducing design complexity as new sections were introduced. This approach also prepares the project for efficient implementation by developers and future product expansion.

From a technical perspective, the platform was designed with a modern full-stack architecture in mind. The frontend is suitable for implementation using Next.js, React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS, while the backend can be powered by Node.js, Express.js, and PostgreSQL. User authentication, booking management, property listings, reviews, wishlists, and search functionality were planned as scalable backend modules that support future growth. Image optimization, responsive layouts, and SEO-friendly page structures were also considered during the design process to ensure strong performance and discoverability.

Throughout the project, several usability problems emerged and were progressively refined. Early versions contained too many competing visual elements, making it difficult for users to focus on booking actions. By simplifying layouts, increasing whitespace, and strengthening visual hierarchy, the interface became significantly easier to scan. Search interactions were streamlined to reduce the number of required inputs, while destination cards were redesigned to highlight the information travelers care about most, including ratings, pricing, location, and photography.

The final result is a modern tourism platform that combines inspiration with practical booking functionality. Roamia demonstrates how thoughtful UX design can transform the way people discover Algeria by making destinations more accessible, accommodations easier to compare, and authentic local experiences more visible. The platform is designed to scale beyond hotels into guided tours, adventure experiences, cultural activities, and host-managed accommodations, creating a complete travel ecosystem rather than a traditional booking website.

Working on Roamia reinforced the importance of designing around complete travel journeys instead of isolated pages. It highlighted how strong information architecture, reusable design systems, and user-centered booking flows contribute to products that are both visually compelling and commercially effective. The project also strengthened my ability to adapt proven interaction patterns from established platforms while creating a unique product tailored to a specific regional market.
