Vernacular Orphanage Village

This project is an architectural design for a vernacular orphanage village located near Qaroun Lake in Fayoum, developed on a 12 km² site. The project aims to create a self-sustaining, human-centered community that supports orphaned children socially, psychologically, and environmentally while respecting the local identity of Fayoum.

The village program includes residential housing for orphans, administration buildings, a rehabilitation and mental health center, school zone and library, workshops for local industries such as pottery and carpentry, football court, and hospitality facilities for visitors and staff.

The design approach is based on vernacular architecture principles, using local materials, traditional construction techniques, and climate-responsive forms suitable for Fayoum’s hot-arid climate. Buildings are organized into small-scale clusters to create a sense of safety, belonging, and community, while open spaces and courtyards enhance natural ventilation, shading, and social interaction.

Special attention was given to social sustainability, ensuring clear separation between public, semi-public, and private zones, while maintaining smooth pedestrian circulation throughout the village. The project also integrates local craftsmanship workshops as both educational and economic tools, supporting skill development and community integration.
