Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is an economically important medicinal and aromatic plant; however, its productivity is significantly affected by root rot and wilt diseases caused mainly by soil-borne pathogens such as Fusarium oxysporum, Pythium spp., and Rhizoctonia solani. These pathogens thrive under conditions of excessive soil moisture, poor drainage, and high temperatures, leading to root decay, yellowing of leaves, vascular discoloration, and eventual plant death. Sustainable management of these diseases focuses on environmentally friendly and integrated approaches rather than heavy reliance on chemical fungicides. Effective strategies include improving soil drainage and optimizing irrigation practices, applying biological control agents such as Trichoderma spp. to suppress pathogenic fungi, using soil solarization to reduce pathogen populations, implementing crop rotation to prevent pathogen buildup, and cultivating resistant basil varieties. Integrating these sustainable practices enhances plant health, maintains soil fertility, and ensures long-term productivity while minimizing environmental impact.
