Project: Sumud Mesh Network – Offline Peer-to-Peer Communication System IoT Solution for Emergency Scenarios

تفاصيل العمل

I designed and developed Sumud Mesh Network, a decentralized, offline wireless communication system that operates independently of the internet or centralized infrastructure. The project aims to enable resilient local messaging for communities in crisis—particularly in Gaza—during emergencies such as power outages, network blackouts, or armed conflict.

Key features and responsibilities:

Built compact, solar-powered mesh nodes using ESP32 microcontrollers and LoRa modules for long-range, low-power communication.

Implemented custom routing and message relaying over ESP-NOW and LoRaWAN protocols to enable multi-hop messaging across neighborhoods.

Developed a lightweight web-based user interface (using Vue.js and Bootstrap) served directly from each node, allowing users to send/receive text alerts via Wi-Fi.

Integrated local storage (SQLite) on edge nodes to persist messages until delivery.

Designed the system with offline-first principles, rugged hardware enclosures, and culturally relevant UX (e.g., node names referencing historic Palestinian villages).

Tested scalability and reliability in simulated outage scenarios using real-world topography.

This project demonstrates expertise in IoT architecture, embedded systems, offline web applications, and human-centered design for high-stress environments.
