Homeless Shelter for the Mentally Ill – Contextual & Sustainable Design

This project focused on designing a sustainable homeless shelter for mentally ill individuals in Egypt, with an emphasis on contextual research, user needs, and healing through architecture.

The design process began with field research, where I visited areas with a high presence of homeless individuals and directly engaged with them to understand their basic needs and challenges. Based on this research, I selected a site in an area with the highest demand and began developing the zoning and planning. The layout was carefully designed to improve mental well-being, creating comfortable living spaces and therapeutic environments.

Sustainability was addressed by making the project self-sufficient, integrating work opportunities for residents to empower them and support long-term independence. The landscape design played a central role, incorporating healing gardens and green spaces to enhance mental health and provide a calming, restorative environment.

This project demonstrates my ability to integrate social responsibility, mental health awareness, sustainable strategies, and landscape architecture into a holistic design.
