1- prioritized my goals according to the business goals priorities. ( I did not work on the whole site rather I worked on pages I wanted to rank) I cut it short.

2- solved on-page problems for the pages I was working on to get backlinks to (for me I had problems in cannibalization..some important pages shared the keyword with other pages.... so instead of working on the wrong page, I worked on the page that google trusted and ranked it and at the same time was achieving my business goals (data extracted from GSC ) I also had problems in headings coordination.

3- analyzed competitors' profiles for backlinks (I did not create any spam links).

4- figured out what people link to in the software development industry (by analyzing competitors and SERP) for me they were some directories that had an advanced position on the first page of SERP ... I worked to get backlinks from all of them (some directories took time to review my information but in the opposite, I got ranked for my keyword at those directories)

5- used advanced search operators to get high-quality links
